The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to those in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil suffered a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be restricted to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, causing financial strain on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that would be required so he could learn how to use it.
Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the generous grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
