Flea Information and interesting facts [1]

  • In Texas, fleas thrive all year long due to our warm humid climate.  The ideal climate for the lifecycle of a flea is 70 to 85 degrees with 70% humidity.  In Houston, fleas will thrive in carpeted areas, furniture, wood flooring cracks, throw rugs, pets, and even you!

  • Fleas will latch onto wild animals such as squirrels, rats and rabbits to get their food, which is blood.  A female flea can consume 10 to 15 times its body weight in blood every day.  Only after feeding can a female flea lay eggs, and each adult female flea can lay from 15 to 30 eggs every 24 hours.  Flea eggs take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks to hatch and up to 2 months to reach adulthood.  The average female flea can live up to 2 years and lay 1000 or more eggs in their lifetime.

  • Fleas are 1/16 to 1/8 inches long and therefore are not always easy to spot like a fly or a cockroach.  When you see your dog or cat scratching constantly, there is a good chance that fleas are well under way to infesting your property.

  • A flea can jump straight up about 8 inches high and can leap about 12 inches in distance.  Fleas are wingless but can easily get around your property or home.  Since they need to penetrate the skin to obtain their food, they can transmit diseases.

  • Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a food source, but can live up to one year without feeding.  If you go on vacation, and the house is empty (without cats and dogs), flea eggs go through 2 stages of their life cycle.  When the eggs reach adulthood, instead of hatching, they become dormant until you return from vacation.  Often, these are the most severe infestations since the fleas all hatch at once and attack in ravenous hordes.

Church Services recommendations and treatment guidelines

  • Church Services Pest Control division recommends flea treatment for both inside and outside the home.

  • We have a 30 or 60 day warranty option for more severe infestations.  The standard warranty is 30 days but can be upgraded for a fee to 60 days.  Ask your technician for more details.

  • Before we treat the inside of the home, the customer must vacuum their carpets and floors thoroughly.

  • The vacuum bag should be thrown away in an outside garbage can.

  • Certain items must be removed from the floor such as storage totes, magazines, toys and other loose items.  Wherever there is carpeting we will treat it, including closets and under beds, so these areas should be free of items (even shoes). This will allow a more thorough treatment.

  • The customer will have to be out of the house for a minimum of 3 to 4 hours during and after treatment.

  • Pets need to be secured in an area that is not being treated such as a bathroom that has tile.

  • After the treatment when the customer returns to the home, we recommend vacuuming once again and then discarding the vacuum bag in an outside garbage can to prevent further infestation.
