Repair Process: Underslab Re-Route & Underground Sewer Line

Prior to arriving at your home, we schedule an underground utility marking company to come to your home. They will mark all underground gas, phone, cable television and electricity lines to avoid any mishaps while digging. If necessary, we will also obtain permits from the city prior to our crew’s arrival.

Crew Arrival & Introduction

When our crew arrives on the first day (normally between 8:00 and 9:30 a.m.) the foreman will introduce and alert you of the crew’s arrival. He will then assign the job and delegate responsibilities to the crew. Any concrete breakouts will be performed at this time (i.e. for access holes or re-routing trenches) using an electric jackhammer.

Excavating Process

Excavating an access hole will be necessary for any tunneling to be performed. If there are plants in the area, they will be transplanted into buckets or to a separate area designated by the homeowner (Note: Church Services does not guarantee the survival of plants).

A ventilation fan will be placed at the tunnel entrance to keep the tunnel properly vented. The crew will hand dig a 3′ x 3′ tunnel to gain access to the necessary plumbing. Excavated soil will be staged on your driveway to be used to backfill the tunnels. If extremely hard soils are encountered, the use of electric hand held excavating equipment might become necessary.

Necessary Trenching

Trenching necessary for re-routing will be hand excavated. The trench will be approximately 8 inches wide and to the depth necessary for proper drainage. Trenches will be lined with a compaction sand base to ensure proper support for piping. Schedule 40 PVC piping will then be connected and laid in the trench. Also, clean outs will be installed at a minimum of every seventy feet along the re-routed line.

Plumbing Repair & Re-Route

When the excavation is complete, licensed personnel will make the plumbing repair or re-route. They will also make all necessary repairs and connections under the slab. They use pipe hangers at a maximum of every four feet and within one to two feet from connections. These hangers will be used to support the new plumbing and will be anchored into the slab. All under-slab connections will be made with clamp-all type clamps to ensure the best possible connections. (Plumbing may be inoperable for a few hours during this portion of the repair).

Wall Penetrations

If wall penetrations are necessary, they will be performed during the plumbing repair. Any bricks that are removed to perform this procedure will be replaced as neatly as possible at the completion of the work (some difference in mortar color may exist due to aging). Sheetrock replacement will not be included in our bids.

Hydrostatic Testing

At the completion of the plumbing installation, a hydrostatic test will be performed on the newly installed drain lines. The city inspector will be called to review the job and the hydrostatic test if applicable. Upon proper approval from the city inspector, trenches and tunnels will be backfilled.

Backfilled Tunnels, Trenches & Concrete

Tunnels will be backfilled with the same material that was removed if it can be properly compacted using electric hand compaction tools. If the original material cannot be used, new compaction soil will be brought in and used instead.

All trenches will be backfilled and then compacted. If concrete breakouts were performed, they will be patched at this point as well. The use of concrete saws or a mechanical chisel will be used to make patches appear as neat as possible (all patches will be reinforced using wire mesh). Any sod that was removed for trenching will be re-laid, but its survival cannot be guaranteed.

Before We Leave

Prior to the crew’s departure, concrete work surfaces will be cleaned and the foreman will do a final walk-through with the homeowner.
