What the New Water Heater Regulations Mean to You.

In an effort to help conserve energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the Department of Energy (DOE) has initiated new water heater regulations that will take effect in April 16, 2015. Besides updating code restrictions, the DOE is requiring manufacturers to add more insulation which will require additional ventilation. These changes will effect gas, oil, and electric water heater manufacturing practices and require higher prices from manufacturing to wholesalers, installers and onto consumers.

We understand that you may have a few questions. Know that we’re here to help. In the meantime, you may find these Frequently Asked Questions helpful:

Will I have to replace my water heater because of the new regulations?

Absolutely not. These regulations will require all NEW water heaters manufactured after April 16, 2015 to meet the new standard making them more expensive.

What if my water heater is nearing the end of its life span?

Now is a great time to consider a new water heater, but the inventories on the water heaters built under the old regulations are dwindling. Some plumbing¬†companies are discounting their current water heater inventories, but soon–especially after April 16, 2015–we expect these deals to disappear. Wholesalers and retailers will battle rising costs of the new models and move any inventory of older models.

What will happen to the older model water heaters?

Manufacturers are not required to stop making their products with current standards until after April 16, 2015, so these models can still be sold while supplies last.

All companies that sell and install water heaters will need to train their staff on the requirements as a result of the new regulations. Installation practices will vary by manufacturer and require more care and attention to detail. At Church Services, our expert plumbers have already begun to be trained on the new water heater practices and are ready for when the new models hit the marketplace.

Please let us know if you have any questions about the water heaters built under the new regulations.
